After having put in place, from March or April, secure protocols and entry restrictions on their territory, mainly by means of systematic fortnights, the main countries of North-East and South-East Asia, from China (4,739 dead) to Vietnam (35 dead) and Thailand (59 dead), via Taiwan (7 dead), South Korea (475) and Japan (1,799) have remarkably controlled the epidemic in the spring and did not experience a secondary wave, or contained it fairly quickly. These countries have chosen not to lower their guard this summer, and this until today, despite some adjustments, just like New Zealand (25 dead) and Australia (907) even if the latter had to reconfigure .
These policies have turned out to be a winning bet: although the flow of tourists and businessmen has dried up in all these countries, they have made it possible to continue to operate the economies – shops, restaurants, etc. sports or cultural establishments – but also employment in factories. Three of them, China, Taiwan and Vietnam, even saw their exports jump from 6% to 11% in the third quarter compared to that of the previous year, when the Covid-19 was non-existent, a sign that they gained market share while competing India was hit hard by the virus. All three should avoid a recession.
Now, several of these countries are planning “travel bubbles” with each other with lighter protocols – such as between Hong Kong and Singapore by the end of November in principle, without a fortnight. China and Thailand are working on an agreement to this effect by January. The Australians have eased their restrictions for New Zealanders – but not the other way around. New Zealand Prime Minister, newly re-elected, Jacinda Ardern, has warned her fellow citizens that she does not want to take any risks for the austral summer holidays ” and that the country will continue with the restrictions in place at the borders “. Although long delayed, these devices should relieve certain economic sectors.
Striking contrast with Europe
Faced with a labor shortage in agriculture and social services, Taiwan has just put in place aid to subsidize the fortnight’s stay for foreign workers – generally from Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia – while securing their fortnight in specialized centers.
