I made a video for the Japanese government available on the YouTube channel of Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF). A big thank you to Japan for trusting me and proposing this mission to highlight Japanese game as well as the city of Takachiho that I like a lot.
TAKACHIHO: A DIVE INTO THE HEART OF JAPANESE MYTHOLOGY
Takachiho, in the Miyazaki prefecture, is a destination I’ve been to several times but never get tired of it! It offers a good breath of fresh air in the middle of the nature of the island of Kyushu with activities to do and superb landscapes to admire.
THE AMANO IWATO-JINJA SANCTUARY
The Amano Iwato-jinja shrine is a sacred place where the most famous episode of Japanese mythology took place: the flight ofAmaterasu, goddess of the sun, in a cave that plunged the world into darkness after an argument with her brother Susanoo, god of the sea and the wind.
All the gods then gathered in front of the cave around a banquet and Uzume No Mikoto, goddess of cheerfulness and good humor, began a dance that made all the gods laugh. Amaterasu, curious, let the rock of her cave crack open to see what was happening and the gods prevented her from returning.
This famous dance that brought out Amaterasu, it was the very first dance that is called Kagura.
THE THROATS OF TAKACHIHO
Takachiho is a place known for its gorges formed from ancient lava flows from Mount Aso. You can walk there on hiking trails but also enjoy a small boat trip.
Amaterasu Tetsudo is a former railway line which now offers walks in the middle of impressive scenery.
TOCHIMATA NO TANADA
Rice fields formed on ancient lava flows that offer magnificent popo maps. This place has been designated as a World Agricultural Heritage.
KAGURA DANCE AT TAKACHIHO-JINJA SANCTUARY
Every evening in Takachiho, you can attend a must-see performance here: the Kagura, a Shinto religious dance that retraces episodes from Japanese mythology. I had already attended the long version which takes place once a year but the short one hour version is also very nice to see!
THE MAGIC OF KUNIMIGAOKA
In Takachiho, we enjoy the Kagura in the evening but we also get up early to enjoy the sunrise at Kunimigaoka, a magnificent observation point that merges into a sea of clouds in the fall when the weather conditions are good (from mid-September to the end of November).
Takachiho and Miyazaki prefecture located in the middle of mountains and nature, game is a great specialty of the region, especially wild boar and Sika deer.
I was able to taste all this with sometimes quite creative dishes, such as for example at Kawamasa restaurant at Nobeoka : pizza with Sika deer, Maki with Shika deer, cheese and asparagus or even wild boar Doteni.
I also tasted a bowl of Shishidon, wild boar meat at the rest area Hinokage.
Finally, I was able to taste one of the best game in the region at Matsudaya, a very famous place in Miyazaki prefecture.
There you go, thank you again to the Japanese government for trusting me for this mission which allowed me to return to Takachiho, one of my favorites in Japan! 🙂
